Department Working Group

Now, more than ever before, we realize the greatest need is to not feel isolated, whether that is personally or professionally. Our group has a dedicated outreach where we bring in exciting new researchers in order to create opportunities for visiting speakers and members of our department to interact. We also seek to look inward, to ways that we can connect our department members and create a culture of inclusivity, support, and involvement.

Systems Seminar Series

A departmental seminar series run primarily by the postdocs and graduate students- with aims at celebrating science, diversity, and inclusivity. A seminar series that serves as a forum for early career scientists (junior group leaders/assistant profs, postdocs, and finishing graduate students) to share their research and offer opportunities for collaborations and networking.

Mentorship

Participating in the academic community involves engaging in mentoring relationships at all career stages, with individuals often playing the role of both mentor and mentee. Retention and success in STEM fields therefore rely heavily on the quality of mentor-mentee relationships, and these relationships are particularly critical for retaining URM trainees. Effective mentorship involves not only technical guidance, but acknowledgment of the life experiences that a person brings to the relationship. We aim to provide training in mentorship through a variety of channels, with a focus on applying principles of DEI to mentoring relationships. Our goal is to develop general programs that target the department as a whole (staff, faculty, trainees), and more specialized programs geared towards postdocs and faculty.
