SSQB Application Assistance Working Group

The goal of the admissions working group is to make the process of applying to the SSQB PhD program more transparent, accessible, and equitable. We currently provide resources to prospective SSQB students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences through the following efforts:

Application Assistance Program (AAP): now in its second year, the AAP is an annual student-run program supporting one-on-one, mentor-mentee relationships between current SSQB PhD students and eligible prospective applicants. At the beginning of the admissions cycle, AAP matches each participating applicant with a current student mentor who provides regular feedback and guidance on specific application materials and the general graduate admissions process. The AAP is available to all students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences who plan to apply to the SSQB program, including but not limited to underrepresented minorities, first-generation students, socioeconomically disadvantaged students, LGBTQ+ students, and students with disabilities. If you’re interested in participating as an applicant, more details are here.

FAQ: towards a more general goal of cultivating an inclusive online presence, the admissions working group maintains a list of responses to frequently asked questions for prospective applicants, available here.

Email hotline: to further aid prospective students in their questions about the application process, the admissions working group runs an email account for inquiries not already covered in the FAQ. Questions that come up frequently on this hotline are periodically added to the FAQ. For details, see here.

New members are always welcome. If you're a current student in the SSQB program who is interested in joining, please contact Nick Hilgert
